Today is Patriots' Day, a Massachusetts state holiday that commemorates the start of the American Revolutionary War.
The Boston Marathon is today and many other activities this weekend have reminded people that it is important to fight for what they believe in.
On Saturday morning April 19 starting at 5:15 am, I was one of tens of thousands of people who witnessed a reenactment the battle of Lexington on the town green.
Here was the ‘shot heard ‘round the world’ which historians say was the start of the American Revolution.
Our location was ideal to see the battle reenactment unfold. We were near Buckman Tavern, where Paul Revere and William Dawes “midnight ride” warned Samuel Adams and John Hancock about the British Regulars impending arrival.
It was exciting to see the British Regulars in their red uniforms march down main street to confront the Colonials who were gathered on the green.
Later, on Saturday afternoon, I returned to Lexington center to watch the parade marking the historical day in American history.
Up and down the streets, people quietly protested.
Colonials fought 250 years ago against what they felt were unfair taxes. Today, Americans are doing the same, many protesting against tariffs, which are a form of taxation on consumers.
Yes, there is a great deal of polarization in America in 2025. And I am happy that citizens can still stand up for what they believe in.
